For the last two weeks, participants in the kitchen assistant and cleaning staff FIER course at Gothenburg Folk High School (Västra Götaland) have been doing their first internships. The host workplaces are kitchens and cleaning services at kindergartens and schools in the vicinity of participants’ home areas, in order to help them make contacts for their future working life. For many of them, this has been their first encounter with a Swedish work place, which can be challenging sometimes. However, the majority of both participants and mentors at the workplace find this experience rewarding.

An example of this is Shuqri, a participant who is doing her internship at the Gropens Gård preschool in Gothenburg. During last days, she has been washing dishes, preparing vegetables and getting the lunch ready to be served. Nonetheless, as learning does not stop at the workplace, she is also actively participating in the breaks during the day, and socialising with the school’s staff. “I like it here, everyone is so nice,” she affirms.
18 enthusiastic participants are already following the FIER course at Gothenburg’s Folk High School, and all of them are currently completing their internships. In the autumn period they have completed two weeks as interns (one week in the kitchen and one week cleaning), and in they will do another four weeks in spring (two weeks for each activity this time).
